A wide range of data presentation techniques can be used for your data, including bar charts, scattergraps and chloropleth maps. The graph shows a scattergraph of environmental deprivation scores (collected through fieldwork) plotted against economic deprivation scores (compiled from the census) for three areas of the same city.
The Mann-Whitney U Test can be used to test if there is a significant difference in inequality between the two sampled areas. Need more information about this test?
The null hypothesis is that there is no significant difference in deprivation index (as measured in a bi-polar analysis) between two suburbs of the same town: Ditherington and Kingsland. The results were collected and summarised as follows.
| Ditherington | Kingsland |
|---|---|
| Deprivation index | Deprivation index |
| 4 | 0 |
| 1 | 2 |
| -5 | 6 |
| -2 | 8 |
| -3 | 3 |
Give each result a rank.

Now calculate U1 and U2. In this example, U1 = 21 and U2 = 4. Choose the smaller of the two values (i.e. 4).
The critical value at p=0.05 probability level is 2. Since our calculated value of 4 is < 2, the null hypothesis is not rejected.
In conclusion, there is not a significant difference in deprivation index between Ditherington and Kingsland.
